There is a general appreciation of the importance of English, even amongst people who don’t need it or use it. Every other school in Guayaquil boasts that it is bilingual, which is often a hollow claim. The state school system is widely derided. Teachers are poorly paid and given very little training. Schools are poorly equipped and falling apart. Work is available for foreign teachers in private schools which offer a reasonable rate of pay, though nothing spectacular. Universities pay better but often require a Masters or similar postgraduate qualification. English language institutes generally pay very poorly and don’t recognise the value of a CELTA qualification.
