The Spanish introduced horses to the Andean people and they played a vital role not in the conquest but in maintaining control of the vast new empire. Many indigenous people still use horses as the only way for them to move around the land and they are also an integral part of hacienda life.

Apart from the pleasure of travelling on horseback and forming a bond with your mount, horse-riding in Ecuador is a great way to explore the countryside and interact with the people. They will often be more interested in the horse than you.

Throughout Ecuador you can organize different types of horse-riding trips, from a short excursion suitable for beginners, to a multi-day tour from hacienda to hacienda.

In my experience of riding in Ecuador I have found the horses to be well-loved and cared for and very tolerant of the riders’ differing abilities.
